Glossary
The vocabulary of app store charts, in one place. Each entry links to the page where you can see it in action.
- Top Free
- The chart of apps with no up-front price, ranked by new downloads over a short recent window. More
- Top Paid
- The chart of apps with an up-front price, ranked by purchases over a short recent window.
- Top Grossing
- The chart of all apps ranked by revenue, including in-app purchases and subscriptions. Free-to-play games usually lead it. More
- Storefront
- Apple's term for a country's App Store. Each of the 175 storefronts has its own charts; Google Play has the equivalent per country.
- Overall chart
- The store-wide ranking across all categories, 200 positions deep.
- Category chart
- The same ranking restricted to one category (Games, Finance, Photo & Video…). App Store category charts are 100 deep; Google Play's go to 200 and split apps from games.
- Rank velocity
- How fast downloads are arriving right now, as opposed to the lifetime total. Charts are driven by velocity, which is why a launch can jump to #1 for a day.
- Snapshot
- One captured copy of a chart at a point in time. AppWinners takes one per chart per day at about 06:00 UTC and keeps all of them.
- Movement / delta (24h)
- The change in position versus the previous day's snapshot. Up means a lower number, closer to #1.
- New / Back
- New: the app was not on this chart in yesterday's snapshot. Back: it had been on the chart before and returned.
- Peak rank
- The best position observed for an app on a chart since tracking began.
- Days on chart
- The number of daily snapshots in which an app appeared on a chart.
- Movers
- The apps that climbed, fell, entered or dropped out of a chart since the previous day.
- Reach
- The number of countries in which an app is on at least one chart today.
- Featuring
- Editorial placement by the store (Today tab, collections). It lifts downloads and therefore rank, but is not itself a chart.
- ASO (App Store Optimization)
- Improving an app's visibility in the stores through metadata, keywords, screenshots, ratings and, indirectly, chart position.
- Bundle ID / Package name
- The technical identifier of an app: a numeric id on the App Store (id389801252) and a reverse-domain package on Google Play (com.instagram.android). Paste either into AppWinners search to jump to the app.
- Reconstructed archive
- Pre-2026 chart data AppWinners assembled from public archives (a CC-BY academic dataset and Internet Archive captures). Sparse, labelled, and never mixed into daily statistics. More
