App Store and Google Play Payouts Explained

Updated 19 Oct 2026 7 min readFrom the communityMonetisation

Getting an app into the charts is only half the job; getting the money out of Apple and Google is the other half, and it runs on its own calendar. This guide collects what developers have been asking about payouts over the last year and checks each answer against the official help pages, as of October 2026.

What developers are asking

Across Apple Developer Forums payment threads and the developer blogs that summarise community questions, the same ten questions keep coming up:

  1. When exactly does Apple pay, and why does the date move?
  2. Why does Google pay on the 15th when Apple pays on a drifting Thursday?
  3. What is the minimum balance before either store sends money?
  4. Why does my dashboard say "Balance Carried Forward"?
  5. What does "Payment Returned" mean and how do I retry?
  6. Do I have to file a W-8BEN if I am outside the US?
  7. Does Apple or Google withhold tax from my proceeds?
  8. Why is the amount in my bank lower than "Estimated Proceeds"?
  9. Can I be paid in USD to a non-US bank?
  10. Who do I contact when nothing happens for weeks?

Apple's fiscal calendar and payout timing

Apple does not pay on calendar months. It pays once per fiscal month, and its fiscal months follow a 4-4-5 week pattern starting in late September, so each "month" is 28 or 35 days long and closes on a Saturday 9. The contractual promise is payment within 45 days of the last day of the fiscal month in which a transaction completed 1. In practice, community-maintained calendars show payments landing on a Thursday roughly 33 days after the fiscal month closes; both sites that publish these calendars say the dates are estimates because Apple does not publish a schedule 8,9.

The official answer is in App Store Connect. Payment data for the previous fiscal month appears in Payments and Financial Reports from the first Wednesday of the current fiscal month and is complete by the first Friday; the "Expected Payment Date" shown there is the date Apple actually disperses funds 2. Once sent, the row shows a Transaction ID your bank can use to trace the transfer 2.

Google Play's monthly cycle

Google is simpler on paper. Orders processed, refunded or charged back from the 1st to the last day of a month are paid out around the 15th of the following month 5. Deposits are not initiated on weekends or bank holidays 5,6. Settlement can take up to five business days, longer in some countries, and the Payments profile page in Play Console only updates within 24 hours of a payout, so a blank page on the 15th is not itself a problem 5,6.

Minimum thresholds

Apple's threshold depends on the bank's country and account currency. For most listed pairs, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, INR, BRL, AUD and CAD, it is a nominal 0.02 USD. A few are higher (100 USD for Colombian pesos, 27 USD for Hong Kong dollars), and unlisted pairs default to 40 USD 3. Google's minimum is 1 USD for local-currency payouts and 100 USD for USD wire transfers 5. Google lets you raise your own threshold and suggests at least 100 USD for wire payouts, since wire fees can exceed 50 USD 7.

Bank and currency setup

Apple sends one payment per currency per fiscal month, does not support split or multiple bank accounts, and converts into your account currency at roughly the spot rate on the payment date 1. The figure you see before payday is "Total Estimated Proceeds"; the final amount can differ because of exchange-rate movement and any withholding applied at payment, and your bank or an intermediary may take a fee on top 2. Google requires the account to be in the local currency of the country on your payments profile; a test deposit fails otherwise, and some locations are paid only by wire 6.

Tax forms and withholding

Every Apple developer with a Paid Apps Agreement must complete a US tax form: a W-9 for US entities, or a W-8BEN, W-8BEN-E or W-8ECI chosen through an App Store Connect questionnaire for everyone else 4. Apple also asks for country-specific registrations: an ABN plus GST registration in Australia (without it you cannot sell at all), a CNPJ or CPF in Brazil, GST/HST in Canada, and equivalents for Ireland, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand 4. On the Google side, non-US merchants submit a W-8BEN from the payments profile, and Google says it may withhold payouts or suspend transactions if tax information is missing or inaccurate 6.

Withholding is where most confusion sits. Apple's help pages describe it only in specific cases: Brazil-based developers pay the standard withholding rate until a tax residency certificate is reviewed; payments to Nepal-based bank accounts lose a 5% advance income tax at the correspondent bank; Mexico applies VAT and income-tax withholding according to registration status 1,4. For Brazil as a market, Google applies a 25% tax to purchases by Brazilian customers for any merchant paid in a currency other than BRL, and the only opt-out is to stop distributing there 6. Community guides on the W-8BEN-E warn against entering a US TIN you do not have and against copying someone else's treaty article numbers without checking the IRS text 13. Forum posts quoting Apple finance staff that app sales by non-US developers are not subject to US withholding are several years old unconfirmed; ask a tax adviser.

Why payments get held

Apple's help page explains the two statuses behind most threads. "Balance Carried Forward" means the threshold was not met and the balance rolls into the next period 2. "Payment Returned" means your bank rejected the transfer; App Store Connect shows the reason and the Transaction ID, and after you fix the details Apple says payments resume within two regularly scheduled cycles, which can mean two more months 2.

Community reports fill in the rest. In a March 2025 thread, several developers saw a payment marked "paid" that never arrived, or a "Returned by the Beneficiary Bank" notice while their bank had no record of any transfer; one Japanese developer traced recurring returns to the account-name format (half-width katakana) and the routing format, and said Apple would not say which field was wrong 10. A July 2025 thread asking how to retry after updating bank details got no answer in two weeks 11. A January 2026 thread about a W-8BEN update sent through Contact Us had no reply after a week; the only official response, in July 2026, was that account issues belong with developer support, not the forums 12. The "Balance carried forward" thread, open since 2019 with over 160 replies, is the closest thing to a shared troubleshooting log 15.

Community-reported gotchas

  • Tax forms lock after submission in App Store Connect; corrections go through Apple's contact form, and banking is not processed until the tax forms for the paid agreement are complete 14.
  • A tax change made before the end of a fiscal month applies to that month; after it, to the next one 4.
  • Google lets you self-hold payouts for up to a year, but only if changed before the 21st of the month 7.
  • Apple issues no 1099-MISC; US developers may still receive a 1099-K, and Google mails 1099-K copies by 31 January 6.

How this shows up in the charts

Payout mechanics decide who can afford to stay in the rankings. A studio paid 33 to 45 days after a fiscal month closes is effectively lending Apple a month of revenue, and Google's cycle is only slightly shorter. Developers who climb the charts with paid acquisition tend to have reserves or financing: a Top 50 run in week one pays out in week six. Apps that spike into the Top Charts and vanish within a cycle often belong to small teams whose ad budget ran out before the first payout landed, and the squeeze is longest around Apple's five-week fiscal months, July and October in 2026 9.

If a figure here does not match your console, trust the console; Apple is explicit that the Expected Payment Date in App Store Connect is the only authoritative schedule 2.
