Apps Winning in 2026: 9 Breakouts and What They Did Right
Updated 19 Oct 2026 8 min readCase studiesGrowth
The apps winning in 2026 are mostly AI assistants, one text-based social network, a calorie scanner built by teenagers, and a pair of prediction markets. What they share is not a category but a mechanism: each found a loop that kept pulling installs after the launch spike, in a market where total downloads have been falling for five straight years.
The backdrop: fewer installs, far more money
Appfigures counted 106.9 billion downloads across the App Store and Google Play in 2025, down 2.7% from 2024 and the fifth annual decline in a row, while consumer spending rose 21.6% to $155.8 billion 17. Sensor Tower's numbers tell the same story from a different angle: 2025 was the first year people worldwide spent more on non-game apps than on games, and generative AI apps were the main reason, with in-app revenue above $5 billion and downloads doubling to 3.8 billion 1.
Winning in 2026 therefore means holding a top-chart slot while the pool of new installs shrinks, not a one-week spike.
The nine apps, side by side
| App | What the data says | The move that worked |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1.1B+ MAU, 46.4% share of AI assistants (May 2026) 2 | Default status, then paid tiers |
| Gemini | 1B monthly users (Aug 2026) 3 | Distribution through Android, Search and Workspace |
| Claude | 245M MAU, ~13% of users paying (2026) 2 | Highest paid conversion in the field |
| DeepSeek | No. 1 on the US App Store, Jan 26, 2025 5 | A free model that matched the leaders |
| Threads | 500M MAU (Jun 2026) 6 | Cross-promotion plus relentless feature cadence |
| Cal AI | $50M ARR, acquired by MyFitnessPal (Mar 2026) 9 | Paid influencers with guaranteed reach |
| Temu | Most downloaded US iPhone app, 2023 and 2024 10 | Ad spend at a scale nobody matched |
| Kalshi / Polymarket | Kalshi valued at $22B (May 2026) 13 | Event-driven install spikes |
| Bluesky | 20M users and No. 1 in Nov 2024; MAU down 27% YoY by Jun 2026 14,15 | A surge without a retention loop |
1. ChatGPT: from novelty to default
Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report puts ChatGPT above 1.1 billion monthly active users, the fastest app to reach a billion, with a 46.4% share of AI assistant usage by the end of May 2026. That share dipped below 50% for the first time in January 2026, a sign of the category growing rather than ChatGPT shrinking 2. ChatGPT generated $3.4 billion in in-app purchase revenue in 2025 1. It became the verb for the category before the platforms shipped their own apps, then layered paid tiers onto a daily free habit.
2. Gemini: distribution beats launch buzz
Google said in August 2026 that the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly active users, and that daily users had tripled over the previous year 3. Gemini never had a dramatic chart moment; it got there by being wired into Android, Search and Workspace. Sensor Tower gives it a 27.7% share of AI assistant usage, second only to ChatGPT 2.
3. Claude: the conversion story
Claude is the smallest of the three big assistants at 245 million MAU, but Sensor Tower reports that about 13% of its users pay for a subscription, the highest conversion rate among AI apps 2. Card-transaction data from Indagari shows Claude's paying consumer base and revenue up roughly 75% between January and May 2026, while ChatGPT's growth has slowed from its much larger base 4. You do not need the biggest audience if yours is the one most willing to pay.
4. DeepSeek: the overnight No. 1
DeepSeek went from No. 31 to No. 1 on the US App Store on January 26, 2025, roughly 2.6 million downloads into its run, and was No. 1 in 51 other countries at the same time. Sensor Tower estimated that more than 80% of its total installs had come in the previous seven days 5. It is the cleanest recent example of rank rewarding velocity over audience. Sensor Tower says OpenAI and DeepSeek together accounted for nearly half of global AI app downloads in 2025 1.
5. Threads: the slow-burn social winner
Threads launched in July 2023 with the biggest sign-up spike in app history and the fastest fall in engagement, a story told in our viral case studies. Three years later it has 500 million monthly users, up from 400 million in August 2025 6, and Similarweb measured 141.5 million daily mobile users in January 2026, ahead of X's 125 million 7. The playbook was cross-promotion from Instagram and Facebook, a creator focus, and a feature cadence that never slowed: DMs, communities, custom feeds, ghost posts and live chats, each one a reason to come back 6,7.
6. Cal AI: paid reach, measured like performance ads
Cal AI, a calorie-scanning app founded in 2024 by Zach Yadegari while he was still in high school, made more than $30 million in its first two years and was acquired by MyFitnessPal in March 2026, with a reported $50 million in annual recurring revenue 8,9. The engine was not organic virality: after one creator post brought about 1,000 users in two days, the team hired a large roster of influencers and paid a fixed fee only once a post hit a minimum view count, so each post converted predictably 8. Note the caution in the record too: Apple pulled the app briefly in April 2026 over an external Stripe checkout and a paywall that showed the weekly price more prominently than the real charge, before it was restored 9.
7. Temu: buying the top of the chart
Temu was the most downloaded free app on the US App Store in both 2023 and 2024, ahead of Threads, TikTok and ChatGPT 10. Its mechanism was ad spend at a scale nobody matched, plus gamified discounts. Tariff changes forced it to stop shipping from China to US customers in May 2025 11, and whether it kept the 2025 download crown is unverified; we could not access a published 2025 US top-10 by downloads.
8. Kalshi and Polymarket: event-driven installs
Prediction markets are the clearest 2025–2026 breakout outside AI. Kalshi raised $1 billion at an $11 billion valuation in December 2025, two months after a round at $5 billion 12, and reached $22 billion by May 2026 13. Polymarket saw $529 million traded on markets tied to a single geopolitical event in March 2026 18. Installs follow the news calendar: elections, games, court rulings. Published chart-rank histories for either app could not be found, so peak positions are unverified, but the pattern on our movers page around big events is unmistakable.
9. Bluesky: the counter-example
Bluesky hit No. 1 on the US App Store on November 13, 2024 and passed 20 million users within a week, with Threads at No. 4 and X at No. 41 that day 14. By mid-2026 Similarweb put its monthly mobile users at 10.4 million, down 27% year over year, and its quarterly average MAU had roughly halved since late 2024 15. The surge was real; the habit loop never arrived. Sora followed a steeper arc: No. 1 in October 2025, No. 101 by late January 2026, shut down by spring 16.
What the winners have in common
Four patterns recur.
A loop, not a launch. Threads shipped something new every month for three years; Cal AI turned creator posts into a priced, repeatable channel; Gemini had a platform feeding it users daily. Bluesky and Sora had one moment and nothing to sustain it.
Velocity wins the chart; retention keeps it. DeepSeek's jump from No. 31 to No. 1 came from a few days of concentrated installs 5. Holding a top-10 slot for months, as ChatGPT has, needs a daily habit underneath.
Money is in fewer, better users. Downloads fell again in 2025 while spending rose 21.6% 17. Claude's 13% paid conversion is worth more than a far larger free audience that never converts 2.
Store rules still bite. Cal AI's week off the App Store in April 2026 shows that payment-flow tactics get audited and a top-5 category app can vanish overnight 9.
How this shows up in the charts
Open the US iOS free chart on any day in 2026 and ChatGPT, Gemini and Threads are usually in the top 20 with little day-to-day movement, which is what a habit looks like. Breakouts show up on the iOS movers page, where a prediction market or a new AI model can jump 50 or 100 places in 48 hours and slide back over the following weeks. Comparing the two views is the quickest way to tell a Bluesky-style spike from a Threads-style climb.
