Indie App Marketing With Zero Budget: The Playbook

You can launch an indie app with no ad budget by stacking free channels that each give a small, timed push: a featuring nomination filed three weeks out, a Product Hunt page scheduled for 12:01 am Pacific, a Show HN, a Sunday post on r/apple and a handful of promo codes sent to writers. None of these works alone; the playbook is about sequencing them into one week so the install spikes overlap.
The launch week, sequenced
The order matters more than any single channel. Apple's editorial team wants nominations early; Product Hunt and Hacker News reward a single concentrated day; Reddit's app communities punish anything that looks like a campaign. Work backwards from launch day.
Apple featuring: nominate, do not hope
Featuring is the single biggest free lever on iOS and it has a form. In App Store Connect, anyone with the Account Holder, Admin, App Manager or Marketing role can file a featuring nomination of one of three types: App Launch (including pre-orders), App Enhancements or New Content. You give it a name, a description of what is new and why it matters, a publish date or window, the platforms and regions, and up to five supplemental links such as a TestFlight public link or art assets 8.
Apple's help page recommends submitting as early as possible with a minimum lead time of three weeks; the public Getting Featured page says two weeks at minimum and up to three months for wider consideration 7,8. Editors say they have no checklist but look at experience, design, innovation, uniqueness, accessibility, localisation and the quality of the product page itself 7. Apple does not promise a reply.
The payoff is real. In October 2026 Apple ran an Indie Games Week with daily features and curated collections for seven independent titles, including a mobile debut for No Man's Sky 10. You will not be picked for that by accident.
Product Hunt
Product Hunt's own guide is unusually specific. Keep the tagline under 60 characters and the description under 500. Upload at least two gallery images (1270x760 recommended) or the gallery will not render, and use a square thumbnail. A YouTube video is optional, but about 53% of Products of the Day since 2021 included one. Add co-makers by username and ask them to create accounts well before the day. Write a maker first comment covering features, who it is for, your story and any community offer; 70% of Product of the Day, Week or Month winners had one 1.
Timing: the homepage runs on a 24-hour Pacific cycle, so 12:01 am PT gives you the full day. You can schedule up to a month ahead. Weekday launches suit companies; weekend launches of side projects got about 15% more "Visit" clicks in Product Hunt's data 1. Hunt it yourself; the guide says third-party hunters offer no measurable advantage, paying anyone for traffic breaks the rules, and company accounts are banned 2. The one hard rule: you may ask people to visit and comment, never to upvote 2.
Afterwards, keep replying for two weeks, email anyone who left contact details, and then redirect attention to your permanent Product page 3.
Hacker News
Show HN is for things people can try, built by the person posting, without a signup wall in the way. Landing pages, waitlists and routine version bumps are explicitly out; a major rewrite can qualify. Title it "Show HN:", explain how and why you built it in the text, and stay in the thread. Asking friends to upvote violates site norms and is detected 4. A developer-tool angle (how you built the sync engine, what you learned about StoreKit) travels far better than "I made an app".
Reddit, subreddit by subreddit
Reddit converts well for apps and bans fast. The rules differ per community, so read each one on the day you post; the following is what their public sidebars said in October 2026.
| Subreddit | Weekly active (Reddit metadata, Oct 2026) | What the rules say about promotion |
|---|---|---|
| r/apple | about 1.0M | Rule 9: no spam or surveys; self-promotion allowed on Sundays only, reserved for app developers, must be a text post, and you must read the detailed wiki first 5 |
| r/SideProject | about 308k | Built for sharing projects and getting feedback; use the format "[Project name] - [Short description]" 6 |
| r/iOSProgramming | about 73k | Developer Q&A community; promotion rules not confirmed in the sidebar unconfirmed, so treat it as a place to share technical write-ups, not store links |
| r/androidapps | about 277k | Sidebar text was empty when checked; posting rules unverified, check the community's pinned posts before posting |
The pattern that survives moderation everywhere: lead with the problem and the build story, answer every comment, and put the store link in a comment or at the end rather than the title.
Building in public on X
The mechanic is simple and slow: post the screenshot of the feature you shipped today, the revenue chart, the rejection email, the fix. Threads that compile a month of those posts on launch day are what people share. Two practical rules: one thread per launch, pinned, with the App Store short link from Apple's marketing tools at the bottom 9; and reply to every developer who engages, because the audience you want is other makers who will cross-promote later.
Short video
TikTok, Shorts and Reels reward a screen recording with a hook in the first second: the bug, the before/after, the "I built this because" line. You do not need a face or a studio. Post the same 20-second clip to all three, link the store page in the bio, and watch the install graph for the 24 hours after each post. Treat it as cheap testing of which feature people respond to; the clip that gets saves is the clip your screenshots should lead with.
Press
Pitch under embargo one to two weeks out, with promo codes attached; Apple lets you generate up to 100 per app version and per in-app purchase for exactly this purpose 9. The full pitching guide is in How to pitch journalists and get press for your app.
ASO and page tests you already own
Run one experiment at a time. Apple's Product Page Optimization tests up to three treatments of icon, screenshots or preview for up to 90 days and reports conversion and confidence in App Store Connect 11. Google's store listing experiments test icon, feature graphic, screenshots and descriptions, with Google recommending you change one asset per test 12. Use your Product Hunt and Reddit threads as the keyword source: the words people use to describe your app are the words to put in the subtitle.
Cross-promotion
Trade placements with two or three indies whose users overlap yours: a "more from makers we like" row, a mention in each other's release notes, a swap of newsletter slots. It costs nothing, and the build-in-public audience is where you find the partners.
How this shows up in the charts
A well-sequenced launch week produces a short, sharp climb in the category charts followed by a slide, and the slide is the honest signal. Watch your app on the iOS movers list for your country and the category charts for the two weeks after launch. If the Day 0 spike fades to nothing by Day 7, the channels worked and retention did not; fix onboarding before spending another launch. If the post-spike floor is higher than the pre-launch floor, you have found a repeatable loop, and the next featuring nomination (for the next big update) is where the compounding starts. The mechanics of why install velocity moves chart rank are covered in how App Store rankings work.
